The seafood allergy panel screens for IgE antibodies against various seafood allergens, including shellfish (shrimp, crab, lobster) and finned fish (salmon, tuna, cod). A positive result indicates sensitization to specific allergens and can help confirm a diagnosis of seafood allergy in patients who present with allergic symptoms after consuming seafood.
Individuals with symptoms such as itching, hives, swelling, shortness of breath, or gastrointestinal discomfort after consuming seafood should consider this test. It is also recommended for those with a family history of food allergies or who experience anaphylactic reactions triggered by food without a known cause.
The test requires a blood sample, which is analyzed for the presence of allergen-specific IgE antibodies. Elevated levels of these antibodies suggest that the immune system is sensitized to one or more seafood proteins. The test is conducted using ELISA or other immunoassay methods in a specialized laboratory.
A positive result indicates that your immune system has produced antibodies against specific seafood allergens. However, a positive result alone does not confirm clinical allergy. The results must be interpreted in the context of medical history, symptoms, and possibly additional tests like oral food challenges or skin prick testing.
While the seafood allergy panel is highly useful, it is not definitive. Clinical correlation is essential. Some people may have sensitization without symptoms, while others may react to small amounts of allergens despite low IgE levels. Hence, follow-up with an allergist is recommended for complete evaluation.
