Kidney Check

The Kidney (Renal)Check is a group of blood tests used to assess kidney function and overall kidney health. It helps detect kidney disease, monitor progression, and guide treatment.

Common Components of a Kidney (Renal) Check:

1. Serum Creatinine

• Creatinine is a waste product from muscle metabolism.
• It’s filtered and removed from the blood by the kidneys.
• Elevated levels indicate impaired kidney function.

2. Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)

• Measures urea nitrogen, a waste product formed from protein breakdown.
• Raised BUN levels may indicate kidney dysfunction or dehydration.

3. Urea

• Related to BUN; measures the concentration of urea in blood.
• Helps assess renal function and protein metabolism.

4. Electrolytes (sometimes included in extended profiles)

• Sodium (Na+), Potassium (K+), Chloride (Cl-), Bicarbonate (HCO3-)
• Kidneys regulate these electrolytes; abnormal levels can reflect kidney problems or acid-base imbalances.

5. Calcium and Phosphorus (sometimes included)

• Kidneys regulate minerals; abnormalities can indicate kidney disease.
