The ToxoRubella PCR test is a dual-pathogen molecular diagnostic test that detects the DNA of Toxoplasma gondii and Rubella virus in clinical samples. It is primarily used in prenatal screening or neonatal evaluations to assess potential congenital infections. Early identification of these pathogens is crucial since both can cause severe complications during pregnancy, including miscarriage, neurological abnormalities, or birth defects.
Pregnant women are at increased risk of transmitting these infections to the fetus, often without showing any symptoms themselves. The PCR test offers a rapid and highly sensitive method to detect active infection, enabling timely medical intervention. Early diagnosis can significantly reduce the risk of severe congenital conditions like hydrocephalus (due to toxoplasmosis) or congenital rubella syndrome.
It is most commonly advised when a pregnant woman presents with symptoms suggestive of infection or when fetal abnormalities are seen on ultrasound. It may also be done as part of a broader TORCH screening panel during pregnancy, especially if the mother has not been vaccinated against rubella or if there is known exposure to cat feces or undercooked meat.
A positive result indicates active infection with either Toxoplasma or Rubella, depending on which organism is detected. A negative result typically rules out ongoing infection at the time of testing, although timing and specimen type can affect accuracy. Confirmatory testing or serial monitoring may be necessary in certain cases.
The test usually requires blood, amniotic fluid, or cerebrospinal fluid depending on the clinical indication. Samples are analyzed using real-time PCR techniques, which provide quick and precise results, typically within a few days.
