Who should get tested?

AMH test in women:

  1. The test is used in women to evaluate infertility, determine ovarian reserve and to estimate the time that is available for conceiving. Basically AMH is used as an ovarian function test.
  2. AMH is sometimes also ordered for women who are undergoing in-vitro fertilization. The amount of AMH will help evaluate the response to stimulation.
  3. AMH can also be used to determine if menopause has already set
  4. To diagnose PCOS and is used along with the clinical findings and other test results
  5. In certain ovarian cancers, AMH levels are found to be high – in such cases, the AMH test is also used as a tumor marker test.

AMH test in infants is used along with other tests in case of ambiguous genitalia.

Anti-Mullerian Hormone is a hormone produced by ovaries in females and by the testicles in males. The amount of AMH differs according to age and gender of a person.

In early years of development of a baby boy, the testicles produce AMH, thereby promoting the development of male reproductive organs. The levels of AMH remain high in boys until they hit puberty.

In girls the levels remain low until puberty thus allowing for the female reproductive organs to develop and post puberty, the ovaries produce AMH and the levels remain high during the child bearing years and taper off to undetectable levels post menopause.

In women, the AMH levels regulate the LH and FSH levels during the process of ovulation. Thus, the amount of AMH present in the blood is an indication of follicular growth.

Why Anti-Mullerian Hormone test?

Since AMH levels is a reflection of the follicular growth, it gives an indication of a woman’s ovarian reserve and therefore is an indication of fertility or the likelihood of conceiving. The test is also one of the many tests ordered to diagnose PCOS. PCOS is a condition where the levels of AMH is elevated due to excess follicles producing abnormally high levels of AMH. AMH can also predict the onset of menopause.

What are the Requirements and References for the AMH test ?

Requirements:

You do not need any special preparations before the test.

Reference values for Anti Mullerian Hormone:

Response to hormonal stimulation - ng/ml

Negligible < 0.2

Reduced 0.2 - 1.0

Normal 1.0 - 7.0

High (OHSS Risk) > 7

Interpretation

High levels of AMH indicate PCOS. There is no cure for PCOS, but symptoms can be managed with medications and/or lifestyle changes, such as healthy diet and weight management. Low levels of AMH relate to poor ovarian reserve. AMH testing helps your doctor to access your chances of getting pregnant and whether you can delay your pregnancy any further if you wish to. When AMH is found to be high in certain types of ovarian cancer, levels are monitored to estimate disease progression and treatment effectiveness. It is always advisable to talk to your doctor about your results and what it could mean in your case.
