Coagulation Profile Package in Mumbai Overview

1. What it is

The Coagulation Profile (also called a Coagulation Panel or Coagulogram) is a series of blood tests that evaluate how well your blood clots.

It helps identify bleeding disorders, clotting abnormalities, or liver dysfunction that can affect coagulation.

2. Why it’s done

Your doctor may order a coagulation profile to:

  • Investigate unexplained bleeding or bruising
  • Evaluate excessive clotting (thrombosis)
  • Monitor anticoagulant therapy (e.g., warfarin, heparin)
  • Assess liver function, since clotting factors are made in the liver
  • Pre-operative screening to check bleeding risk before surgery

Sample Requirements

  • Specimen: Citrated plasma (light blue-top tube with sodium citrate anticoagulant)
  • Sample Volume: ~2–3 mL
  • Fasting: Not usually required
  • Precautions: Avoid underfilling tubes (can alter ratios and affect accuracy)

Conditions Diagnosed or Monitored

  • Hemophilia A/B (Factor VIII or IX deficiency)
  • Von Willebrand disease
  • Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)
  • Vitamin K deficiency
  • Liver dysfunction
  • Thrombophilia (tendency to form clots)

Clinical Applications

  • Pre-surgical evaluation to detect bleeding tendencies
  • Monitoring anticoagulant therapy (warfarin, heparin, DOACs)
  • Diagnosis of bleeding disorders such as:
    • Hemophilia A/B
    • Von Willebrand disease
    • Factor deficiencies
  • Detection of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
  • Assessment of liver function (since most clotting factors are synthesized in the liver)
  • Evaluation of unexplained bruising, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, or heavy menstruation

The Coagulation Profile Test is a vital diagnostic tool that examines your blood’s ability to clot properly.
It helps identify bleeding disorders, clotting risks, and liver-related abnormalities, and ensures safe surgical or anticoagulant management.
