This test involves collecting a sample of sputum (mucus from the lungs) to identify any bacterial, viral, or fungal infections causing respiratory symptoms. The susceptibility part of the test assesses which antibiotics will be most effective in treating the infection.

• It’s essential for diagnosing respiratory infections like pneumonia, tuberculosis (TB), bronchitis, and other lung infections.
• It helps doctors determine the best antibiotic treatment for infections, particularly when the cause is unknown.

• Individuals with symptoms like persistent cough, fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or bloody sputum.
• Those with a history of chronic lung conditions (e.g., COPD, asthma) or a weak immune system, which increases the risk of infections.
• People exposed to TB or living in regions where TB is common.

The sample may need several days to grow in the lab. In addition to identifying the organism, the test also determines if it is antibiotic-resistant, ensuring proper treatment is prescribed.
