Blood Coagulation Profile Package in New Delhi Overview

The Blood Coagulation Profile is a set of blood tests that evaluate how well your blood clots. These tests help detect bleeding disorders, clotting disorders, or monitor blood-thinning treatment.

What is a Blood Coagulation Profile?

It's a group of laboratory tests that assess different parts of the blood clotting (coagulation) system. The profile usually includes:

1. Prothrombin Time (PT)

  • Measures how long it takes blood to clot through the extrinsic and common clotting pathways.
  • Used to check for clotting factor deficiencies or monitor warfarin (Coumadin)
  • Results often reported with an INR (International Normalized Ratio) to standardize across labs.

2. Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT or PTT)

  • Measures clotting time via the intrinsic and common pathways.
  • Used to detect clotting factor deficiencies or monitor heparin
  • Measures the time it takes for fibrinogen to convert to fibrin, the final step in clot formation.
  • Useful for detecting problems with fibrinogen or the presence of certain anticoagulants.

3.Platelet Count

platelets are critical for clot formation.

Why is the Blood Coagulation Profile Done?

  • Evaluate bleeding disorders: Easy bruising, nosebleeds, excessive bleeding after surgery or injury.
  • Evaluate clotting disorders: Unexplained blood clots, stroke, or pulmonary embolism.
  • Monitor anticoagulant therapy: Such as warfarin, heparin, or direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs).
  • Before surgery: To ensure normal clotting function.
  • Liver disease: Since many clotting factors are produced in the liver.
  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC): A serious clotting and bleeding disorder.
