Polycystic Ovary Disorder (PCOD) also known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). It is common hormonal disorder affecting menstrual cycle, weight, skin and ability to conceive.Polycystic means "many cysts," and PCOS often causes clusters of small, pearl-sized cysts in the ovaries. The cysts are fluid-filled and contain immature eggs. Women with PCOS produce slightly higher amounts of male hormones known as androgens, which contribute to some of the symptoms of the condition.It has been linked to an increased risk for developing several medical conditions including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease. There are few studies conducted in India which shows PCOS as 9.13% and 22.5%.

Symptoms of PCOS:

  • Irregular periods: infrequent, heavy or no periods at all
  • Difficulty getting pregnant
  • Multiple cysts formation on the ovaries.
  • Thinning or loss of hair (Alopecia)
  • Excess hair growth on face, chest, buttocks or back (Hirutism)
  • Excessive Oily skin or acne on face and body
  • Development of darkened skin patches
  • Unexplained or sudden Weight gain
  • Psychological problems : Depression, Anxiety, Mood swings, Sleep disorder

Why PCOS test is done?

There is no single test that, by itself, shows whether you have polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and give you a physical exam and blood tests to help find out if you have this condition.

  • Follicle stimulating Hormone: leads to formation of follicles in ovaries. Can be normal or elevated in PCOD
  • Testosterone: primarily found in Men, however, often increased in PCOD

Interpretation:

PCOS is an emerging health problem during adolescence therefore promotion of healthy lifestyles and early interventions are required to prevent future morbidities. There is no specific test that would confirm the presence of PCOD or not. Your doctor will assess your family history, menstrual history, various physical examinations like USG of abdomen or pelvic examination alongwith these blood test to collectively diagnose whether or not you have PCOD. The earlier it is detected earlier treatment can be started; However, it is believed that PCOD can not be cured but with appropriate medicine management and life style changes it can be controlled. Also person with PCOD can conceive and have healthy pregnancy provided appropriate precautions and medicines are taken.
