This panel is a diagnostic tool used to detect allergic sensitivities to different types of grass pollens. Individuals suffering from seasonal allergies, such as hay fever, often have hypersensitivity to grass pollen. The test helps identify specific allergens responsible for allergic symptoms like sneezing, nasal congestion, watery eyes, and asthma. It is especially useful in customizing allergy treatment and immunotherapy.
A small blood sample is collected and analyzed for the presence of specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies that are produced in response to grass pollen allergens. These allergens may include timothy grass, Bermuda grass, ryegrass, orchard grass, and others. The presence and concentration of IgE antibodies help determine if a person has an allergic response to any of the tested grasses.
Results typically indicate whether the individual has low, moderate, or high sensitivity to each type of grass pollen included in the panel. A higher IgE concentration suggests a stronger allergic response. This information helps allergists recommend appropriate treatment strategies, including avoidance measures and allergy shots (immunotherapy).
The test involves a simple blood draw, so risks are minimal and limited to mild discomfort or bruising at the site of blood collection. There are no risks associated with the allergy panel itself, as the test is performed outside the body and does not involve direct exposure to allergens.
Unlike skin prick tests, blood-based allergy panels do not usually require stopping antihistamines or corticosteroids. However, it’s still best to inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, as they may provide additional guidance based on your overall treatment plan.
