HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin)

The HbA1c (Hemoglobin A1c) test is a blood test that reflects your average blood glucose (sugar) levels over the past 2 to 3 months. It measures the percentage of hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) that is coated with glucose. This gives a snapshot of how well your blood sugar has been controlled during this period.

Why consider this test?

Diabetes Monitoring: It's an essential test for people with diabetes, helping to assess how well blood sugar levels are managed over time. It's often used in conjunction with daily blood glucose testing. Early Detection of Prediabetes or Diabetes: It helps identify those with prediabetes (higher-than-normal blood sugar levels that haven’t yet reached diabetes levels) or diabetes, even before symptoms appear. Long-Term Control: Unlike other tests that measure blood sugar at a single point in time, HbA1c gives an overall picture of blood sugar control over the past few months. This makes it a more reliable indicator of how well someone is managing their blood sugar levels.

Who should get this test done?

People with Diabetes:

• Those diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes need regular HbA1c tests (usually 2 to 4 times a year) to monitor their blood sugar control and make adjustments to treatment if necessary.

 People with Prediabetes:

• If you're at risk of developing diabetes or have been diagnosed with prediabetes, regular HbA1c testing can help track whether your blood sugar levels are rising.

  At-Risk Individuals:

• People with risk factors for diabetes, such as a family history of diabetes, being overweight, or having high blood pressure, may need this test to check for early signs of the condition.

 Routine Health Check-ups:

Even if you don’t have symptoms, if you are over 45 years old or have risk factors, your doctor might recommend an HbA1c test as part of a routine health exam.

  The HbA1c test measures the percentage of hemoglobin in your blood that is attached to glucose. The higher your blood sugar, the higher the HbA1c percentage.

• Normal: Below 5.7% – Healthy blood sugar levels.
• Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4% – Blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet in the diabetes range.
• Diabetes: 6.5% or higher – Indicates that you may have diabetes.

This test doesn’t require fasting, unlike other tests that measure blood sugar at a single point in time.
