Frequently Asked Questions

The immunofluorescence assay (IFA) is a diagnostic technique used to detect the presence of specific antigens or antibodies in a sample. It involves using fluorescent-labeled antibodies that bind to target antigens, allowing visualization under a fluorescence microscope.

The IFA test is commonly used to diagnose autoimmune disorders, infectious diseases, and certain types of cancer. It is recommended when clinical symptoms suggest the presence of specific antigens or antibodies that require confirmation through laboratory analysis.

A sample of blood, tissue, or other biological material is collected and treated with fluorescent-labeled antibodies. The sample is then examined under a fluorescence microscope, where positive results produce bright fluorescent signals indicating the presence of target antigens.

IFA is highly sensitive and specific when performed under standardized conditions. It provides accurate results for diagnosing conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), viral infections, and certain cancers. However, results should be interpreted alongside clinical findings.

Although IFA is highly accurate, false positives or negatives may occur due to sample handling errors or cross-reactivity. Confirmatory tests and clinical correlation are often necessary for definitive diagnosis.
