About Hepatitis A Igm in AGRA
Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) is an enzyme found in nearly all body tissues, including the heart, liver, kidneys, muscles, brain, and red blood cells. LDH plays a key role in energy production within cells, converting lactate to pyruvate in the process of glycolysis.
- The serum LDH test measures the level of this enzyme in the blood. Elevated levels can indicate tissue damage, as LDH is released when cells are injured.
Why consider this test?
- Diagnosis of tissue damage: Elevated LDH levels can indicate cell injury due to conditions like heart attack, liver disease, muscle trauma, or cancer.
- Monitoring disease progression: LDH levels are useful in monitoring hemolytic anemia, liver disorders, myocardial infarction, and certain cancers (such as lymphomas or leukemia).
- Assessing hemolysis: LDH levels are often measured to assess the degree of hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells), especially in conditions like sickle cell disease or thalassemia.
Who should get this test done?
- Individuals suspected of having heart conditions, liver diseases, or muscle damage.
- Patients with a history of trauma or hemolytic anemia.
- Those undergoing cancer treatment to monitor disease progression.
More Information
LDH is a non-specific marker, meaning that high levels don't point to a single disease but suggest that there is tissue damage somewhere in the body. To determine the cause, doctors may use LDH isoenzyme testing to narrow down the source of elevated levels.
