Cmv Viral Load Real Time Pcr,quantitative Test in Agra Overview
What is CMV Viral Load, Real Time PCR Quantitative test?
The CMV Viral Load test (Quantitative PCR) is a molecular test used to measure the amount (or “load”) of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA in a patient's blood (or other body fluids) using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common herpesvirus that can remain dormant in the body and reactivate later. While often harmless in healthy people, CMV can cause serious disease in:
- Immunocompromised patients (e.g. transplant recipients, cancer patients, HIV/AIDS)
- Newborns (congenital CMV)
Why consider CMV Viral Load, Real Time PCR Quantitative test?
- To Diagnose CMV infection especially in people with symptoms
- To monitor disease progression, see if the infection is getting worse or improving
- To guide treatment decisions, determine when to start, adjust, or stop antiviral therapy
- To detect reactivation in transplant patients or those with weak immune systems
- Compared with older antigenemia methods, real-time CMV DNA PCR can detect infection earlier and provides quantitative viral load trends to inform management; however, there is no universal treatment threshold, so institutions define their own based on the local assay and population
Who should get tested for CMV Viral Load, Real Time PCR Quantitative test?
- Solid organ transplant recipients and candidates as part of CMV prevention strategies.
- Hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, where routine surveillance and pre-emptive treatment programs use PCR viral load monitoring to reduce CMV disease and related mortality.
- Other immunocompromised patients at risk of CMV reactivation
- Neonates with congenital CMV for quantifying viral burden

More about CMV Viral Load Real Time PCR
CMV is Cytomegalovirus infection. Cytomegalovirus is virus of Herpes family. Other viruses from this family are chickenpox. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) continues to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients, such as solid organ or bone marrow transplant recipients as well as in AIDS patients. Quantitative CMV PCR testing gives the clinician a "viral load" value useful for monitoring antiviral therapy and possibly identifying patients at risk for CMV disease.
Once infected, virus remains in the body forever in inactive form. However, it can become active due to stress or other immune system problem.
CMV infection is mild with flu like symptoms or no symptoms at all. However, CMV can be serious in individuals with compromised immune system like HIV infection or cancer. Pregnant women with active CMV infection can pass this virus to fetus which can lead to deafness, vision problems or intellectual disabilities. While there is no cure for CMV, antiviral medicines and other treatments may reduce symptoms.
CMV infected person may pass the virus in body fluids, such as saliva, urine, blood, tears, semen, and breast milk. It can spread in the following ways:
- From direct contact with saliva or urine, especially from babies and young children
- Through sexual contact
- From breast milk to nursing infants
- Through transplanted organs and blood transfusions
