Folic Acid

Folic acid or folate test measures the amount of Folic Acid in the blood. The body needs folate for normal growth and production of Blood Cells (red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), and platelets).

The serum folic acid test is often used to assess:

• Folate Deficiency: Low levels of folic acid can lead to anemia (megaloblastic anemia) and other health issues.
• Pregnancy: Pregnant women need higher levels of folic acid to reduce the risk of birth defects in the baby’s brain and spine.
• Gastrointestinal Disorders: Conditions like celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, or malabsorption syndromes can affect folate absorption.
• Alcoholism: Chronic alcohol consumption may interfere with folate absorption.

• Pregnant women or those planning pregnancy to ensure adequate folate levels.
• Individuals with symptoms of folate deficiency, like fatigue, weakness, and mouth sores.
• People with gastrointestinal disorders that affect nutrient absorption.
• Those with alcohol dependency or poor diet habits.

Folic acid deficiency can lead to neural tube defects in developing fetuses and megaloblastic anemia in adults. In certain cases, elevated levels of folate can indicate vitamin B12 deficiency or liver disease.
