PPBS (Postprandial Blood Sugar) Test in Bengaluru Overview

The Glucose PP (Postprandial) Test is a blood test that measures blood sugar (glucose) levels after a meal — usually 2 hours after eating. It is commonly used to:

  • Monitor diabetes
  • Evaluate glucose metabolism
  • Diagnose diabetes or prediabetes

When is GLUCOSE, POST-PRANDIAL, PLASMA test Done?

  • 2 hours after a meal, typically after consuming 75g of glucose (in an oral glucose tolerance test) or a regular meal.

Who Should Get It?

  • People showing symptoms of diabetes (e.g., frequent urination, thirst, fatigue)
  • Those with borderline fasting glucose levels
  • To monitor blood sugar control in people already diagnosed with diabetes

Preparation:

  • Eat a regular meal or consume a glucose drink, depending on the test type.
  • Then, do not eat or drink anything (except water) until the blood sample is taken 2 hours later.

Purpose of the GLUCOSE, POST-PRANDIAL, PLASMA Test

The PP test is used to:

  • Screen for diabetes mellitus
  • Monitor glucose control in people already diagnosed with diabetes
  • Detect impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or prediabetes
  • Evaluate effectiveness of treatment (e.g., diet, medications, insulin)

It is particularly useful when fasting glucose results are borderline or ambiguous.

How the Body Normally Responds After a Meal

After you eat:

  1. Blood sugar levels rise.
  2. Your pancreas releases insulin, a hormone that helps cells absorb glucose.
  3. In a healthy person, glucose levels return to normal within 2 hours.

If your body can't produce or use insulin properly (as in diabetes), blood sugar remains elevated even 2 hours after eating.
