MDR TB Rapid Genotypic
A test using line probe assay (LPA) to detect multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) by identifying mutations in genes associated with resistance to key TB drugs. It is essential for targeted treatment.
MDR TB Rapid Genotypic Test in Bengaluru Overview
No special preparations needed
- Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Complex
- Rifampicin Resistance
- Isoniazid Resistance
The MDR-TB Rapid Genotypic Test detects mutations in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome that confer resistance to rifampicin and isoniazid, the two most critical first-line anti-TB drugs. It identifies multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) quickly, enabling timely treatment modifications.
This test is recommended for:
- Patients diagnosed with TB who are not responding to standard treatment.
- Individuals with a history of previous TB treatment or relapse.
- Contacts of known MDR-TB patients.
The test is performed on a sputum sample or other appropriate clinical specimens using molecular techniques such as PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to detect drug resistance mutations.
- Positive for MDR-TB: Indicates resistance to rifampicin and/or isoniazid, requiring second-line treatment.
- Negative for MDR-TB: Suggests susceptibility to first-line drugs, though additional tests may be required for confirmation.
By detecting resistance early, the test allows for appropriate treatment adjustments, preventing the spread of drug-resistant TB and improving patient outcomes.
