POC Genetic Screening

POC (Products of Conception) Genetic Screening is a specialized test used to analyze genetic abnormalities in fetal tissue following a miscarriage. This test helps identify chromosomal anomalies that might have caused the pregnancy loss. It uses techniques like chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) or karyotyping to detect aneuploidies, deletions, duplications, and other structural abnormalities.

POC Genetic Screening is recommended for:

• Women with a history of recurrent miscarriages.
• Couples experiencing unexplained pregnancy losses.
• Pregnancies that ended due to fetal anomalies detected during prenatal testing.
• Women above 35 years of age experiencing pregnancy loss, where the risk of chromosomal abnormalities is higher.

A sample of the fetal tissue, typically obtained through dilation and curettage (D&C) or following spontaneous miscarriage, is analyzed. The sample undergoes DNA extraction, followed by testing through microarray or other genetic technologies to identify any chromosomal abnormalities.

• Abnormal result: Indicates the presence of chromosomal abnormalities that may have contributed to the miscarriage. Common findings include trisomies, monosomies, or other genetic imbalances.
• Normal result: No detectable chromosomal abnormalities, suggesting that genetic factors may not have caused the pregnancy loss, and further evaluation for other causes is needed.
