Posaconazole Test in Bengaluru Overview

What is Posaconazole test?

Posaconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal medication used to treat and prevent serious fungal infections. Measuring serum levels helps ensure that drug concentrations remain effective for treatment without causing toxicity. Posaconazole test measures the concentration of posaconazole in a patient’s blood serum.

Why consider Posaconazole test?

Posaconazole test can be considered for

  • Therapeutic drug monitoring: Posaconazole absorption and metabolism can vary between patients.
  • Ensure effective treatment: To confirm that serum levels are sufficient to treat fungal infections.
  • Prevent toxicity: To avoid side effects caused by excessively high drug levels.
  • Adjust dosing: Especially important in patients with impaired liver or kidney function or those on interacting medications.
  • Check medication adherence: To confirm patients are taking the medication as prescribed.

Who should get this tested for Posaconazole test?

Posaconazole test can be recommended for

  • Patients receiving posaconazole for treatment or prevention of invasive fungal infections, such as invasive aspergillosis or candidiasis.
  • Patients with conditions affecting drug metabolism, like liver or kidney disease.
  • Patients on multiple medications with potential for drug interactions.
  • Patients showing side effects or poor response to therapy.
  • Patients on long-term posaconazole therapy requiring monitoring.

Other Names Posaconazole Blood Level, Posaconazole Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM), Posaconazole Serum Concentration

Posaconazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal medication used to treat and prevent serious fungal infections, especially in patients with weakened immune systems.

Posaconazole treat infections such as Invasive aspergillosis, Candidiasis (including oropharyngeal and systemic), Prophylaxis (prevention) of fungal infections in high-risk patients (e.g., those with prolonged neutropenia or stem cell transplant recipients), Other serious fungal infections caused by susceptible fungi. Common side effects can be Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, Headache, Elevated liver enzymes (potential liver toxicity), Fever or Rash

Important points:

  • Posaconazole absorption can be affected by food and stomach acid levels.
  • Therapeutic drug monitoring (like the Posaconazole Serum test) helps ensure effective and safe dosing.
  • Can interact with other medications, so always inform your healthcare provider about all drugs you take.
  • Mainly used in immunocompromised patients or severe fungal infections.

Collection instructions

1. Require Serum, Serum extraction should not be performed by use of collection tubes with gel separators, no additives should be added. 2. Label with date and time of collection. 3. Label with date and time of administration of last dose of drug, preferably with drug name and dose. 4. Doctors contact details + clinical and therapeutic history is mandatory. 5. The sample collection has to be performed immediately prior to the next dose (trough)6. It should be noted that trough concentrations may show high inter-individual variation as this depends on several factors these include amongst others the time point of the drug intake, the dosing scheme, the formulation (immediate release, extended release), the time point of blood collection and the metabolic phenotype of the patient. Storage at -18ºC (90 Days),multiple freeze thaw should be avoided.
