Gram Stain

The Gram stain is a laboratory technique used to differentiate bacterial species into two groups based on the characteristics of their cell walls: Gram-positive and Gram-negative. A sample from a body fluid (such as sputum, urine, or blood) is smeared onto a slide, stained, and then examined under a microscope.

• Identifying Bacterial Infections: It is particularly helpful in diagnosing bacterial infections like pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and meningitis.
• Guiding Antibiotic Treatment: The test can provide an initial indication of what type of bacteria is causing the infection, helping doctors choose the most appropriate antibiotic.
