Scrub Typhus Igm

The Scrub Typhus IgM, Serum test detects the presence of IgM antibodies against Orientia tsutsugamushi, the bacteria that cause scrub typhus. Scrub typhus is a disease transmitted through the bite of infected mites, typically in rural areas of Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Africa. The test detects early-stage infection as IgM antibodies are produced shortly after the initial infection.

This test is important for diagnosing scrub typhus in individuals with a history of exposure to areas where the disease is common, particularly if they present with symptoms such as fever, headache, rash, or eschar (a characteristic dark scab at the site of the mite bite). Early detection is crucial as scrub typhus can lead to severe complications like organ failure if untreated.

• Individuals who have traveled to endemic areas for scrub typhus, such as parts of Southeast Asia, India, or the Pacific Islands, and who have symptoms consistent with the disease.
• People presenting with fever, rash, and eschar, especially if they have been exposed to mite-infested areas.
• Healthcare workers or outdoor workers who may be at higher risk of exposure to the mites that transmit scrub typhus.

Scrub typhus can be diagnosed by detecting IgM antibodies using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or other serological tests. Early treatment with antibiotics, such as doxycycline, is effective in treating scrub typhus and preventing complications.
