Rheumatoid Factor (RF)

Rheumatoid Factor (RF) is an antibody that is commonly present in the blood of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the joints. The Rheumatoid Factor, Serum test measures the presence and concentration of RF antibodies in the bloodstream. Elevated RF levels can be an indicator of rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune diseases, though it can also be present in healthy individuals or those with other conditions.

Why consider this test?

This test is used to help diagnose rheumatoid arthritis, especially in individuals who present with symptoms such as joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and fatigue. While the presence of RF can be suggestive of RA, it is not definitive, as it can also appear in other diseases like lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome, and chronic infections. In addition, some people with RA may not have detectable levels of RF.

Who should get this test done?

• Individuals experiencing symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, such as joint pain, swelling, and morning stiffness, especially in the hands and feet.
• People with a family history of rheumatoid arthritis or autoimmune diseases, as they may be at increased risk of developing RA.
• Patients with suspected autoimmune diseases, such as lupus or Sjögren's syndrome, who require further investigation into the underlying cause of their symptoms.
• Individuals with unexplained inflammation or joint issues that may warrant further evaluation to rule out RA or other inflammatory conditions.

Positive RF result is not specific to rheumatoid arthritis alone. It can be found in people with other autoimmune diseases, chronic infections, or even in healthy individuals, particularly the elderly. Thus, RF testing is typically used in combination with other tests and clinical findings to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory disorders.
