About this test

The uric acid serum test measures the level of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is a waste product formed from the breakdown of purines, which are substances found in certain foods and also produced by the body. Normally, uric acid is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and excreted in the urine.

Most uric acid dissolves in your blood, passes through your kidneys and leaves your body in your pee (urine). Hyperuricemia happens if too much uric acid stays in your body.

Hyperuricemia causes uric acid to clump together in sharp crystals. These crystals can settle in your joints and cause gout, a painful form of arthritis. They can also build up in your kidneys and form kidney stones.

Why consider this test?

The uric acid test is a useful tool for diagnosing and managing conditions related to uric acid metabolism and kidney function.

  1. Diagnose and Monitor Gout
  2. Assess Kidney Function
  3. Evaluate Conditions Related to High Uric Acid
  4. Monitor Treatment for Uric Acid Disorders

Who should get this test done?

A uric acid serum test may be recommended for various individuals based on symptoms, medical history, or existing health conditions.

  1. Individuals with Symptoms of Gout
  2. People with a History of Kidney Stones
  3. Individuals with Symptoms of Kidney Disease
  4. Patients with Metabolic Syndrome
  5. People Taking Medications Affecting Uric Acid Levels
  6. Individuals with Suspected Genetic Disorders

More Information

Uric acid is a waste product produced from the breakdown of purines, which are substances found in certain foods and are also part of the body's normal metabolism. Purines are broken down into uric acid, which is then filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and excreted in urine.

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, and redness in the joints. It is caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, which occurs when there is excess uric acid in the blood.
