Platelet Count

A platelet count measures the number of platelets in the blood, which are essential for blood clotting. The test is often performed using EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) as an anticoagulant.

• Diagnosis of bleeding disorders: Helps identify conditions that cause abnormal bleeding or clotting (e.g., thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis).
• Monitoring bone marrow function: Abnormal platelet counts can signal bone marrow diseases or certain cancers (like leukemia).
• Pre-surgical assessment: Ensures that the platelet count is normal before undergoing surgeries, particularly those involving blood loss.

• Individuals with unexplained bruising, bleeding gums, or frequent nosebleeds.
• People undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or those on medications affecting platelet production.
• Those diagnosed with conditions that may affect platelet counts (e.g., leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome).

Low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia) increase the risk of excessive bleeding, while high platelet counts (thrombocytosis) may lead to clotting issues, both of which require medical attention.
