About this test

A Kidney Function Test (KFT) is a series of blood and urine tests used to evaluate how well the kidneys are working. Also known as RFT(Renal function test), Kidney panel. The kidneys are essential for filtering waste products and excess fluids from the blood, maintaining electrolyte balance, and regulating blood pressure.

  • Serum Creatinine: Measures the level of creatinine, a waste product from muscle metabolism, in the blood. Elevated levels can indicate impaired kidney function.

  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): Measures the amount of urea nitrogen in the blood. Urea is a waste product formed from the breakdown of proteins. High levels can suggest kidney dysfunction, though BUN levels can also be affected by other factors like dehydration or high protein intake.

  • Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR): An estimate of how well the kidneys are filtering blood. It’s calculated using serum creatinine levels, age, sex, and sometimes race. A low GFR can indicate chronic kidney disease (CKD).

  • Serum Electrolytes: Includes sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate. Abnormal levels can indicate kidney dysfunction or other health issues.

Why consider this test?

A Kidney Function Test (KFT) is an important diagnostic test to assess how well the kidneys are functioning and is considered for

  1. Routine Health Monitoring
  2. Diagnosis of Kidney Diseases
  3. Monitoring Existing Kidney Conditions
  4. Evaluating Risk Factors
  5. Assessing Kidney Function Before Other Treatments

Regular monitoring through KFTs is a proactive approach to maintaining kidney health and preventing complications. If you have risk factors for kidney disease or experience symptoms that could be related to kidney issues, discussing the need for a KFT with your healthcare provider is a good step.

Who should get this test done?

A Kidney Function Test (KFT) can be beneficial for a wide range of individuals, depending on their health status and risk factors.

  1. People with Risk Factors for Kidney Disease- Diabetes, Hypertension, Family History of Kidney Disease
  2. Individuals with Symptoms Suggestive of Kidney Problems- Unexplained Fatigue, Swelling, Changes in Urination
  3. People Undergoing Certain Medical Treatments- Medications Affecting the Kidneys, Contrast Agents for Imaging
  4. Individuals with Existing Kidney Disease- Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
  5. Regular Health Check-Ups
  6. People with Unexplained Weight Loss or Appetite Changes
