Gamma Glutamyl Transferase [ggt]

GGT is an enzyme found in the liver, kidneys, pancreas, and bile ducts. It plays a key role in breaking down and processing glutathione, a potent antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative damage.

The GGT test is primarily used to evaluate:

• Liver Health: Elevated GGT levels often indicate liver diseases, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver damage due to alcohol consumption.
• Cholestasis: Blockage in bile flow, often due to gallstones or bile duct disease, can lead to elevated GGT levels.

Alcohol Use: Chronic alcohol consumption can significantly raise GGT levels.

• Individuals with symptoms of liver disease, such as jaundice, fatigue, or unexplained abdominal pain.
• People with heavy alcohol use or suspected liver damage from other sources.
• Patients being monitored for liver disease progression or treatment effectiveness.

GGT is often measured along with other liver function tests, such as ALT and AST. While elevated GGT levels are indicative of liver problems, they are non-specific, meaning they can also be elevated in conditions not related to the liver.
