Tibc (total Iron Binding Capacity)

The Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) test measures the amount of iron that can be carried by proteins in the blood, particularly transferrin. It is often used to help diagnose iron deficiency anemia or other conditions affecting iron metabolism.

This test helps assess the body's ability to transport iron. Low TIBC levels may suggest iron overload or anemia caused by chronic diseases, while high TIBC can indicate iron deficiency anemia, a condition where the body lacks sufficient iron for red blood cell production.

People who are at risk for iron-related disorders, such as those with a poor diet, chronic blood loss, or certain medical conditions (e.g., gastrointestinal diseases, kidney problems), should consider this test. It may also be used to evaluate symptoms of anemia, like fatigue or weakness.

TIBC is typically measured alongside other iron-related tests, such as serum iron levels and ferritin, to better understand the body’s iron status. Elevated or decreased TIBC levels can provide insight into various types of anemia and iron disorders.
