What is the Pneumocystis Carinii Detection Test?

This test detects Pneumocystis jirovecii (formerly known as Pneumocystis carinii), a fungus that causes life-threatening pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals.


Who should get this test?

This test is recommended for:

HIV/AIDS patients with respiratory symptoms.
Immunocompromised individuals (e.g., organ transplant recipients).
Patients with suspected Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP).



How is the test performed?

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, sputum, or lung tissue samples are analyzed using PCR, immunofluorescence, or microscopic examination.


What do the results indicate?


Positive Result: Confirms Pneumocystis infection.
Negative Result: Suggests absence of infection but does not rule out the disease entirely.
