Cytomegalovirus DNA Qualitative

A molecular diagnostic test called the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA Detection test is used to find CMV DNA in bodily fluids like blood or urine. CMV is a herpes virus that can seriously harm transplant recipients, immunocompromised people, and newborns.

This test is used to identify an active CMV infection, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems, such as organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, and newborns who may have a congenital CMV infection.

To find and measure CMV DNA, a sample of blood or urine is taken, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology is used for analysis. This aids in identifying the infection's existence and level of severity.

A positive test indicates an active or reactivated infection by confirming the presence of CMV DNA. Low viral loads may point to a latent infection, whereas high loads may indicate a more serious infection that may need treatment.

Antiviral drugs such as ganciclovir or valganciclovir may be prescribed if the test results are positive. To avoid complications, additional monitoring might be necessary, particularly in immunocompromised patients or pregnant women.
