Anti-Ccp Antibody (Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Measures antibodies to cyclic citrullinated peptides (CCP), a marker for rheumatoid arthritis. A positive result can help diagnose the condition, especially in early stages.

Anti-Ccp Antibody (Rheumatoid Arthritis) Test in Mangaluru Overview

The anti-CCP (anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide) antibodies test is primarily used to help diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease that causes joint inflammation. The test detects the presence of antibodies in the blood that target cyclic citrullinated peptides—protein fragments that are often found in the joints of people with RA.

The anti-CCP antibodies are antibodies that target the cyclic citrullinated peptides in the body. In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system mistakenly targets these peptides, leading to inflammation and joint damage.

Other Names: Anti-Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide Antibody Test, Anti-CCP Test, CCP Antibodies Test, Anti-CCP Antibody Assay, Anti-CCP Serology

Purpose of the test

  • Diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis (RA): The anti-CCP test is one of the most sensitive and specific tests for diagnosing RA. It can help distinguish RA from other types of arthritis.
  • Prognostic value: A positive result for anti-CCP antibodies is associated with a more severe form of RA, including early joint damage and a higher risk of complications.

Who should get this test done?

Individuals with Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis:

  • Persistent joint pain, stiffness, especially in the hands, wrists, and knees.
  • Swelling in joints, fatigue, or morning stiffness lasting for more than 30 minutes.

Patients with Suspected Rheumatoid Arthritis:

  • If a doctor suspects RA based on a patient’s symptoms, family history, or physical examination.

People with a Family History of Rheumatoid Arthritis:

  • RA can have a genetic component, so those with a family history may be at higher risk.

Patients with Symptoms of Inflammatory Arthritis:

  • If there are other signs of autoimmune diseases or inflammatory arthritis but the diagnosis is not yet clear, this test can help differentiate RA from other conditions.

 More about test :

  • Positive anti-CCP: Indicates a higher likelihood of RA, and often suggests a more aggressive disease course.
  • Negative anti-CCP: This could still be consistent with RA, especially in its early stages, or it could indicate a different type of arthritis.

The anti-CCP antibodies test is a valuable tool in the diagnosis and management of rheumatoid arthritis. Anti-CCP antibodies are more specific to RA than rheumatoid factor (RF). While RF can be positive in other conditions, anti-CCP antibodies are primarily associated with RA. The test can detect anti-CCP antibodies even before clinical symptoms appear, making it useful for early diagnosis.
