D3 Hydroxybutarate (Ketone)

 The D3 Hydroxybutyrate test measures the level of β-hydroxybutyrate, a key ketone body, in the blood. This test is particularly useful in evaluating metabolic conditions such as diabetic ketoacidosis, prolonged fasting, alcoholism, or disorders of fatty acid metabolism. It provides a more accurate and stable marker of ketosis than traditional urine ketone tests.

A venous blood sample is drawn and analyzed using enzymatic or chromatographic methods to measure the concentration of D3 hydroxybutyrate. The test provides a quantitative measure of ketone levels in the bloodstream.

Elevated levels of β-hydroxybutyrate are indicative of ketosis or ketoacidosis. In diabetic patients, high values may point to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a potentially life-threatening condition. In non-diabetics, it may suggest prolonged fasting, starvation, or alcohol-induced ketoacidosis.

The test is recommended for patients with suspected ketoacidosis, especially those with diabetes presenting with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and altered consciousness. It is also useful in metabolic evaluations for individuals with unexplained acidosis.

No fasting is required, but it is helpful for clinicians to know the patient’s dietary and medical history for proper interpretation.
