BRCA Somatic

ONCOBRCA-Next is a somatic mutation test that detects BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in tumor tissue. It aids in assessing the genetic basis of cancers and selecting targeted therapies.

BRCA Somatic Test in Mangaluru Overview

What is ONCOBRCA-NEXT (SOMATIC) test?

OncoBRCA-NEXT(Somatic) is a tumor-based genetic test that detects somatic mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). Somatic mutations are acquired changes found only in the tumor, not inherited or passed down through families. The test is performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumor tissue, not blood. The goal is to uncover actionable BRCA mutations that may influence treatment decisions, especially the use of PARP inhibitors.

Why consider ONCOBRCA-NEXT (SOMATIC) test?

This test is valuable because it:

  • Identifies BRCA1/2 mutations present in the tumor, which can predict response to targeted therapies (e.g., PARP inhibitors) and support precision oncology strategies.
  • Helps in treatment planning when Germline BRCA testing is negative and tumor behaviour is aggressive or resistant to standard therapy.
  • Provides additional molecular insights for advanced or metastatic cancers

Who should get this ONCOBRCA-NEXT (SOMATIC) test?

The test is recommended for patients with:

  • Ovarian, breast, prostate, or pancreatic cancer, especially in advanced or metastatic stages
  • Negative or inconclusive germline BRCA results
  • Consideration for targeted therapy (PARP inhibitors)
  • Tumors with unknown or unclear molecular profiles

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are two genes each of us inherits from their parents. These are termed tumor suppressors as they help prevent cells, including breast cells from growing and dividing uncontrollable. When BRCA1 and BRCA2 undergo mutations and fail to function normally, the risk of cancer increases. People who have inherited these mutations have a higher-than-average possibility of having breast cancers as well as ovarian cancers.
