What is a stool pH and reducing substance test?

This test helps evaluate lactose intolerance, malabsorption, and digestive diseases by analysing the acidity of the stool and the presence of reducing sugars.


What do abnormal results indicate?


Low pH of faeces (<5.5): implies malabsorption of carbohydrates or lactose intolerance.
Existence of substances that reduce: shows problems with lactose, fructose, and sucrose absorption.



When should I take this test?

Your doctor could suggest this test if you experience persistent diarrhoea, bloating, or inexplicable weight loss.


How do I prepare for the test?

Nothing much, just before testing, stay away from dairy and sugar-rich foods for accurate results.
