What is the Factor V Mutation Detection Test?

This test identifies mutations in the Factor V gene, particularly the Factor V Leiden mutation, which increases the risk of developing abnormal blood clots (thrombophilia).


Who should get this test?

This test is recommended for:

Individuals with a personal or family history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE).
Women considering hormonal birth control or hormone replacement therapy.
Patients with recurrent miscarriages or unexplained pregnancy loss.



How is the test performed?

A blood sample is collected, and DNA analysis is conducted using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect the Factor V Leiden mutation.


What do the results indicate?


Positive for Mutation: Presence of one or two copies of the mutation increases the risk of clot formation.
Negative for Mutation: No mutation detected, suggesting normal clotting regulation.
