What is the Mycobacterial Culture BACTEC test?

The Mycobacterial Culture BACTEC test detects and isolates Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) from clinical specimens. It uses a radiometric or fluorescence-based system to identify the growth of mycobacteria, allowing for early detection.


Who should get this test?

This test is recommended for:

Patients suspected of having tuberculosis (TB) or other mycobacterial infections.
Individuals with persistent cough, weight loss, and fever unresponsive to standard antibiotics.
Patients with extrapulmonary TB or suspected NTM infections.



How is the test performed?

A clinical sample, such as sputum, tissue, or body fluid, is cultured in a BACTEC system, which monitors microbial growth by detecting metabolic changes.


What do the results indicate?


Positive culture: Confirms the presence of Mycobacterium Further identification and susceptibility testing are necessary.
Negative culture: Indicates no growth of mycobacteria, although false negatives may occur in cases of inadequate sample collection.
