This test detects IgM antibodies to HSV-2, the virus responsible for genital herpes, indicating recent or acute infection.
It aids in the diagnosis of a new or reactivated HSV-2 infection, especially in symptomatic individuals with genital lesions.
A blood sample is analyzed using immunoassays to detect the presence of HSV-2 specific IgM antibodies.
A positive result suggests recent or reactivated infection. However, false positives can occur, so results should be interpreted with clinical context.
