Frequently Asked Questions

The Campylobacter species culture test is used to detect and identify Campylobacter bacteria, which are a common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis. It helps confirm infection in patients with symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever, and nausea, and aids in determining antibiotic susceptibility for treatment decisions.

This test is recommended when a patient presents with signs of bacterial gastroenteritis, particularly after consuming contaminated food or water. It is also used in outbreak investigations or when bloody diarrhea or prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms are present.

A fresh stool sample is collected and sent to the laboratory, where it is cultured on selective media under microaerophilic conditions. The sample is incubated for up to 48–72 hours to allow Campylobacter species (mainly C. jejuni and C. coli) to grow. Further tests may be done to identify the specific strain and assess antimicrobial resistance.

A positive culture confirms a Campylobacter infection. A negative result means the bacteria weren’t detected, which may occur if the sample was collected too late, the patient had already started antibiotics, or the infection was caused by another organism. Additional stool tests may be advised if symptoms persist.

Treatment typically involves supportive care with hydration. In severe or prolonged cases, especially in immunocompromised individuals, antibiotics such as azithromycin or ciprofloxacin may be prescribed. Preventive measures, including good hygiene and food safety practices, are emphasized to avoid reinfection.
