Tsh Receptor Antibodies, Serum Test in New Delhi Overview

This blood test measures the presence and levels of antibodies against the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSH receptor) in the blood. These antibodies play a key role in certain thyroid diseases.

What Are TSH Receptor Antibodies?

  • The thyroid gland has receptors for TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), which regulates thyroid hormone production.
  • TSH receptor antibodies are immune proteins that can bind to these receptors.
  • Depending on the type, these antibodies can either stimulate or block the receptor, affecting thyroid function.

Why Is This Test Done?

  • To diagnose and monitor Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder where stimulating antibodies cause hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).
  • To distinguish Graves' disease from other causes of thyroid dysfunction.
  • To predict risk of neonatal thyrotoxicosis in pregnant women with autoimmune thyroid disease.
  • Occasionally, to help diagnose other autoimmune thyroid conditions.

Clinical Significance:

  • Helps confirm diagnosis of Graves' disease, especially when symptoms are unclear.
  • Guides treatment decisions for hyperthyroidism.
  • Monitors disease activity or remission.
  • Assists in managing pregnant women with thyroid autoimmunity to prevent fetal thyroid problems.
