Tsh Receptor Antibodies, Serum Test in New Delhi Overview
This blood test measures the presence and levels of antibodies against the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSH receptor) in the blood. These antibodies play a key role in certain thyroid diseases.
What Are TSH Receptor Antibodies?
- The thyroid gland has receptors for TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), which regulates thyroid hormone production.
- TSH receptor antibodies are immune proteins that can bind to these receptors.
- Depending on the type, these antibodies can either stimulate or block the receptor, affecting thyroid function.
Why Is This Test Done?
- To diagnose and monitor Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder where stimulating antibodies cause hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).
- To distinguish Graves' disease from other causes of thyroid dysfunction.
- To predict risk of neonatal thyrotoxicosis in pregnant women with autoimmune thyroid disease.
- Occasionally, to help diagnose other autoimmune thyroid conditions.
Clinical Significance:
- Helps confirm diagnosis of Graves' disease, especially when symptoms are unclear.
- Guides treatment decisions for hyperthyroidism.
- Monitors disease activity or remission.
- Assists in managing pregnant women with thyroid autoimmunity to prevent fetal thyroid problems.
