About The Test

The Dengue IgG antibody test is a blood test used to detect the presence of IgG antibodies specific to the dengue virus. This test helps in diagnosing past infections with the dengue virus, which is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes.

Why consider this test?

  • Diagnosis of Past Infection: The presence of IgG antibodies indicates that a person has been previously infected with the dengue virus, usually at least two weeks prior to testing.

  • Epidemiological Studies: Helps in understanding the prevalence of dengue in a population.

Who should get this test done?

The Dengue IgG antibody test may be recommended for several groups of individuals, particularly those at risk for dengue virus exposure or those displaying specific symptoms. Here’s a breakdown of who should consider getting this test done:

1. Individuals with Symptoms of Dengue Fever

Those experiencing symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, rash, nausea, or bleeding tendencies should consider this test to check for past infections.

2. People in Endemic Areas

Individuals living in or traveling to regions where dengue is prevalent may be advised to undergo this test, especially if they experience symptoms after exposure.

More about the test

The Dengue IgG test, or Immunoglobulin G test, is specifically designed to detect IgG antibodies against the dengue virus in the blood. Here’s a detailed look at its significance, interpretation, and context in diagnosing dengue infections:

During a secondary dengue infection (suspected dengue infection in someone who was previously diagnosed with dengue fever or sometimes after non-dengue flavivirus vaccination or infection), antibody levels rise rapidly and react broadly against many flaviviruses.

IgG is at high levels, even in the acute phase, and persists for periods lasting from 10 months to life. evels are significantly lower in secondary infections than in primary ones and may be undetectable in some cases. IgM levels are significantly lower in secondary infections than in primary ones and may be undetectable in some cases.
