G-6-PD is an enzyme that helps protect red blood cells from damage. A deficiency in G-6-PD can lead to hemolytic anemia, where red blood cells are prematurely destroyed.

The quantitative G-6-PD test measures the level of this enzyme in the blood and is essential for diagnosing:

• G-6-PD Deficiency: A genetic condition that can cause hemolytic anemia, especially after exposure to certain triggers, such as infections, medications (like sulfa drugs), or foods (such as fava beans).
• Hemolytic Anemia: Identifies the underlying cause of unexplained anemia, particularly in men or individuals with a family history of G-6-PD deficiency.

• Newborns or infants, as G-6-PD deficiency can cause jaundice.
• Individuals of certain ethnic backgrounds (e.g., those of African, Middle Eastern, or Mediterranean descent) who are at higher risk.
