NBS Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (17 OHP)
- 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone
This test screens newborns for congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a disorder affecting adrenal gland hormone production.
To detect CAH early and initiate timely treatment, preventing complications like dehydration and salt loss.
A few drops of blood collected from the newborn’s heel and blotted onto a special filter paper.
High levels of 17-OHP suggest a risk of CAH and warrant further diagnostic testing.
No special preparation is needed. The test is done shortly after birth, typically between 24-72 hours.
