It is commonly used to diagnose infectious mononucleosis and to differentiate between acute and past EBV infections, especially in symptomatic patients.
A sample of blood is collected and tested using ELISA or chemiluminescent immunoassays for EBV-specific IgM.
The presence of IgM antibodies usually signifies a recent or primary infection. IgG levels may also be tested concurrently for confirmation.
