The Western Blot test detects specific antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 in the blood. It was historically used as a confirmatory test following an initial positive ELISA test. Although newer testing algorithms are now common, the Western Blot still serves as a secondary method for confirmation in some settings.
Anyone with a positive HIV screening test or at high risk for HIV may be advised to undergo confirmatory testing. This includes individuals with symptoms of acute HIV infection, or those with known exposure.
A blood sample is taken from a vein. The sample is then analyzed for the presence of antibodies that specifically react with HIV proteins.
A positive Western Blot confirms an HIV infection by detecting multiple antibodies to different HIV proteins. An indeterminate result might require retesting after a few weeks, while a negative result rules out the infection if performed during the appropriate window period.
No fasting is needed. However, it’s essential to disclose any possible exposure risks or ongoing symptoms to your healthcare provider.
