Test details

About the test :

Phosphorus testing refers to measuring the levels of phosphorus in the blood, as phosphorus plays a key role in several important body functions. Phosphorus is primarily found in bones and teeth, but it also contributes to energy production, nerve function, and the formation of DNA and RNA.

Why consider this Test?

Phosphorus is a mineral the body needs to build strong bones and teeth. It is also important for nerve signaling and muscle contraction.

This test is ordered to see how much phosphorus is in blood. Kidney, liver, and certain bone diseases can cause abnormal phosphorus levels.

Phosphate levels that are either high or mildly low usually don't cause any symptoms on their own. But phosphate test is needed with with other tests if

  • An abnormal calcium in blood .A calcium test is a part of a routine exam. Abnormal levels are often linked to abnormal phosphate levels.
  • Have symptoms of low calcium levels.High levels of phosphate can lower calcium levels in blood, which can cause symptoms, such as:
    • Nails that break easily, and/or hair that becomes coarse
    • Rash and/or itchy skin
    • Muscle Cramps
    • Bone pain
    • Irregular heartbeat (arrythmia)

Who should get tested Phosphorus test?

A phosphorus test is often ordered as part of a routine health check up or to monitor certain medical conditions. Some reasons for this test include:

  • Kidney Health: The kidneys help regulate phosphorus levels, so elevated phosphorus levels may signal kidney dysfunction or chronic kidney disease.
  • Bone Disorders: Since phosphorus works with calcium to maintain strong bones, abnormal phosphorus levels can affect bone health.
  • Parathyroid Disorders: The parathyroid glands control phosphorus levels, and an imbalance can indicate a parathyroid problem.
  • Nutritional Deficiency or Excess: Very low or high phosphorus levels could result from diet, supplements, or conditions like hyperparathyroidism.
  • Hormonal Imbalances: Disorders related to hormones, such as vitamin D or parathyroid hormone imbalances, can affect phosphorus levels.

More about test :

Phosphate is a type of electrolyte. Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals. They help control the amount of fluid and the balance of acids and bases (pH balance) in the body. Body also needs phosphates for many other important processes, such as:

  • Building strong bones and teeth. Most of the phosphate in the body is found in bones where it is combined with the mineral calcium.
  • Making energy.
  • Helping nerves and muscles work properly.

The phosphorus in phosphate comes from the foods, including nuts and seeds, dairy products, dried beans, meats, poultry, and eggs. Body tightly controls the amount of phosphate in blood mainly through:

  • They filter extra phosphate from blood and get rid of it through urine. If phosphate level is low, kidneys limit the amount lost through urine.
  • They control how much phosphorous is absorbed from the foods .
