Creatine Kinase (cpk)

The Creatine Kinase (CPK) test measures the level of creatine kinase (also called creatine phosphokinase), an enzyme found in the heart, brain, and skeletal muscles. When muscle tissue is damaged, CPK is released into the bloodstream.

• Elevated CPK levels can indicate muscle damage or heart-related issues. It’s used to diagnose conditions like muscle injury, muscular dystrophy, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and rhabdomyolysis (a severe breakdown of muscle tissue).
• This test is also used to monitor muscle diseases, such as those caused by exercise or trauma, and assess recovery from muscle injury.

• Individuals with symptoms of heart attack or muscle injury, including chest pain, muscle tenderness, weakness, and fatigue.
• Athletes or individuals who experience significant muscle stress (e.g., from exercise or trauma).
• Patients with existing heart conditions or muscle diseases needing ongoing monitoring.

CPK levels typically rise within hours after muscle injury or heart attack and return to normal within a few days. The CPK-MB fraction is more specific to heart muscle damage and can be helpful for diagnosing heart attacks.
