What is the PGS Embryo 10 test and what is its significance?

PGS (Preimplantation Genetic Screening) Embryo 10 refers to a comprehensive genetic test performed on embryos prior to implantation during an IVF (in vitro fertilization) cycle. It screens for chromosomal aneuploidies across all 24 chromosomes, helping to identify embryos with the correct number of chromosomes (euploidy). “Embryo 10” implies that the test is being conducted on the 10th embryo in a given cycle or batch.


How is the test conducted?

A few cells are carefully biopsied from each embryo at the blastocyst stage (usually day 5 or 6 of development). These cells are then analyzed using techniques such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) or array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) to assess chromosomal integrity and number.


What do the results mean?

 The results identify whether the embryo has the correct number of chromosomes (normal/euploid) or an abnormal number (aneuploid). Embryos with normal chromosomal content have a significantly higher chance of successful implantation, a healthy pregnancy, and reduced risk of miscarriage. The information also helps select the best embryo for transfer.


Who should undergo this test?

PGS is typically recommended for couples undergoing IVF who are of advanced maternal age, have had recurrent pregnancy losses, multiple failed IVF cycles, or carry known chromosomal translocations. It is also useful for those who wish to reduce the risk of passing on chromosomal abnormalities.


Is any preparation required?

No special preparation is needed by the patient beyond standard IVF procedures. The test is performed on embryos created during the cycle.
