Amylase

An amylase test is a blood test that measures the amount of amylase, an enzyme that helps break down carbohydrates into sugars, in the blood or urine. Amylase is primarily produced in the pancreas and salivary glands. This test is typically used to evaluate and monitor conditions affecting these organs, especially the pancreas.

 

• Diagnosis of pancreatitis: An increase in amylase levels is often linked to acute pancreatitis, a sudden inflammation of the pancreas.
• Diagnosis of other pancreatic conditions: Elevated amylase can indicate conditions like pancreatic cancer or chronic pancreatitis.
• Other causes of increased levels: Conditions such as gallstones, gastrointestinal perforations, and some kidney problems may also cause elevated amylase levels.

Salivary gland problems: Amylase levels can rise in conditions affecting the salivary glands, like mumps.

This test is suggested if the patient is suspected from :

• Suspected pancreatitis
• Abdominal pain
• Gallbladder issues
• Digestive problems
• Monitoring pancreatic conditions

Interpreting Results:

• Elevated levels: Could indicate acute pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, or other conditions affecting the pancreas or salivary glands.
• Decreased levels: May suggest conditions such as pancreatic insufficiency or other chronic diseases of the pancreas.
