About the test :
A Kidney and Liver Profile Test refers to a series of blood tests that help evaluate the health of your kidneys and liver, two essential organs in your body. These tests check for any abnormalities or diseases related to these organs, and they can help diagnose conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, and metabolic disorders.
Why consider this Test?
- To assess liver and kidney function regularly or when symptoms (such as swelling, fatigue, yellowing of skin, or abdominal pain) are present.
- When you have conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or a history of liver or kidney disease.
Who should get this Test Done?
A liver and kidney profile test is typically recommended for individuals who may have or are at risk for conditions affecting these organs. Here are some groups of people who should consider getting these tests:
- People with Symptoms of Liver or Kidney Problems
- Individuals with a History of Liver or Kidney Disease
- People with Risk Factors for Liver and Kidney Disease
- People on Certain Medications
- Individuals with Metabolic or Cardiovascular Issues
- Monitoring in Chronic Conditions
- Pregnant Women
More about this test :
Kidney Function Tests:
- Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN):
- Measures the amount of urea nitrogen in your blood, which is a waste product formed when your body breaks down protein. High levels can indicate kidney dysfunction.
- Serum Creatinine:
- Creatinine is a waste product generated from muscle metabolism, and healthy kidneys filter it out. High creatinine levels may suggest impaired kidney function.
- Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR):
- An estimate of kidney function based on your creatinine levels, age, sex, and other factors. It shows how well your kidneys are filtering waste. A GFR below 60 for three months or more can indicate kidney disease.
- Uric Acid:
- Elevated levels can indicate kidney problems or conditions like gout.
- Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Bicarbonate):
- These electrolytes help regulate fluid balance and can be affected by kidney problems.
Liver Function Tests:
- Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT):
- An enzyme found in the liver. High levels can indicate liver damage or disease, such as hepatitis.
- Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST):
- Another enzyme found in the liver and muscles. Elevated AST levels may suggest liver damage or a muscle-related issue.
- Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP):
- This enzyme is present in the liver, bones, and bile ducts. High levels may indicate liver disease or bile duct obstruction.
- Bilirubin (Total and Direct):
- Bilirubin is a yellow compound produced by the breakdown of red blood cells. If the liver is not functioning properly, it may not process bilirubin efficiently, leading to jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).
- Albumin:
- This protein is produced by the liver. Low levels of albumin can indicate liver disease or kidney problems, as well as malnutrition.
- Total Protein:
- Measures the total amount of protein in your blood, including albumin and globulins. Abnormal levels can indicate liver or kidney problems.
