Lead

Detects the concentration of lead in the blood, used to assess recent exposure to lead. High levels can indicate poisoning, particularly in children, and lead to neurological damage.

Overview of Lead in Rohtak

The Lead, EDTA Whole Blood test measures the concentration of lead, a toxic heavy metal, in whole blood collected in an EDTA tube. It is the gold-standard test for detecting recent and ongoing lead exposure and is widely used to diagnose and monitor lead poisoning. Lead can enter the body through contaminated air, water, soil, food, paints, batteries, industrial products, certain traditional medicines, and cosmetics. Once absorbed, it accumulates in the blood, bones, teeth, and organs, where it can remain for years and cause long-term health effects. Even low levels of lead exposure can be harmful, particularly in infants and children, where it may affect brain development, learning, behaviour, and growth. In adults, chronic lead exposure can contribute to high blood pressure, kidney damage, nerve disorders, reproductive problems, and cardiovascular disease. Measuring lead in whole blood provides the most clinically useful assessment of current exposure and helps guide treatment and follow-up.

Who Should Get This Test Done?

This test may be recommended if individuals:

●     Work in industries with potential lead exposure, such as battery manufacturing, mining, smelting, construction, printing, metal recycling, or have hobbies involving lead-containing materials.

●     Live in or frequently visit older buildings with deteriorating lead-based paint, use old plumbing systems, or reside near industrial sources of lead contamination.

●     Have symptoms of lead poisoning, including abdominal pain, constipation, fatigue, headaches, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or unexplained anaemia.

●     Are a child with developmental delays, learning difficulties, behavioural concerns, or other signs that may suggest lead exposure.

●     Are pregnant or planning pregnancy, use products that may contain lead (such as certain traditional medicines, cosmetics, or pottery), or require monitoring during or after chelation therapy.

Why Consider This Test?

Lead poisoning is a preventable but potentially serious health problem. In children, even modest elevations in blood lead levels can cause irreversible effects on intelligence, behaviour, and academic performance. Early detection allows identification and removal of the exposure source before permanent damage occurs. In adults, regular monitoring helps prevent chronic complications associated with occupational or environmental exposure. For pregnant women, detecting elevated lead levels is important because lead can cross the placenta and affect foetal growth and neurological development. The test also plays a critical role in determining the need for treatment, including chelation therapy in cases of significant toxicity, and in monitoring response to therapy over time.

More Information

Blood lead levels reflect recent exposure and the balance between blood and soft tissue lead stores, although they do not represent the total amount of lead accumulated in bones over a lifetime. Results should be interpreted alongside the individual’s exposure history, symptoms, and other relevant investigations, including blood counts and kidney function tests.
