Pyruvate

This test measures the concentration of pyruvate in the blood, which plays a central role in cellular energy metabolism.

It is used to investigate mitochondrial and metabolic disorders, particularly when lactic acidosis is suspected.

A blood sample is collected, usually after fasting, and processed quickly to prevent changes in pyruvate levels.

Elevated levels may suggest mitochondrial dysfunction or certain metabolic conditions. It is often interpreted alongside lactate levels.

Fasting may be required. The sample must be handled and processed rapidly for accurate results.
