Frequently Asked Questions

Beta-2 Microglobulin (B2M) is a protein found on the surface of many cells, especially white blood cells, and is released into the blood and urine. This test is often used to evaluate kidney function, monitor certain cancers like multiple myeloma and lymphoma, and assess immune system activity. Elevated B2M levels can be indicative of disease progression or kidney dysfunction.

Physicians typically order this test when they suspect kidney disease or to monitor cancer progression. It can also be used when there’s a concern about immune disorders or during HIV monitoring, as levels can rise with increased immune activation.

A blood sample is drawn from a vein, usually in the arm. It’s a routine and quick procedure, typically taking only a few minutes.

Elevated B2M levels may indicate kidney damage, especially when the kidneys cannot effectively clear the protein. In cancer, high levels might suggest tumor burden or poor prognosis. However, results must be interpreted along with other clinical findings and diagnostic tests.

No special preparation is required for this test. However, informing your healthcare provider about ongoing medications or conditions is always helpful for accurate interpretation.
